WOP course (My first 3 weeks on SONDELA)
27 January 2011
Communication is one of the most important lessons in life you can learn about life. There's always a time and place for everything you do,but it's important to do and say things at the right time.
Today's lesson about trust was really interesting,it's important to choose wisely before you just go a head with trusting new people.
I honestly felt that I've learned nothing today,I already knew most of the things with the trust subject.
28 January 2011
Early this morning all of the students attendant the handing over meeting which was interesting.Willie gave all the staff members their work for the weekend and we all got to see how that part of management works.
Then we all went to the hall to start with the Policies and Procedures,we were all divided into groups and had to sign the form as well.
Later after lunch all the groups went to different points to experience the "workplace" and how things work.It was a lot of fun to welcome each and one of them and to tell them about the different types of "Bok drolle"haha!
I'm also happy to say that I've got the chance to bond with other students, and now we're all friends!
29 January 2011
Today we started with the First aid training L1.Of course we first had to do all the theory before we could do the real deal on a dummy. We also learned about P.P.E (Personal Protective Equipment),the human body, and how the airflow of the body works etc.
It's quite difficult to stay awake in that class but everyone eventually did.Thank goodness for those body breaks! After lunch we did a little bit more theory, and after that we started practical. The two first aid trainers showed us how to perform CPR etc.Timothy and Gerhard gave us the chance to perform all of these above on the dummies. They even showed us what we did wrong so that we can learn from our mistakes!
1 February 2011
Today we finished the last part of first aid training. We've learned all about;wounds heart attacks, abdominal and chest injuries etc.
We finished the last part of practical as well and were divided into groups to practice on each other. The one person had a broken leg,or was stabbed in the chest etc...then we had to take control of the situation.
3 February 2011
Wow!What a day!!!Me and some of the students had to be at class at 07:00am to finish our first aid practical.Even though I stressed a lot,it was really fun!
We also started with the fire prevention, and it was a lot more fun than the first aid. We've learned about all the different extinguishers and how to control a fire.
I really enjoyed the part when our partners had to blindfold us,and then when we had to find the exit.
What a fun day!!!
4 February 2011]
Today some of the students went home for their weekends off,and the rest who weren't had their first on duty weekend.Me and Marinda was on duty at the CVP and we had to do welcoming and help Christine with a few things.
We had to work until 9pm but luckily Christine told us to go home at half past 6.We were so grateful!
6 February 2011
Today and this weekend was one of the most hectic weekends of my life! For the first time some of the students (group1) worked today and yesterday, and I was one of them.
I went on game drives with Loany and Jp and the taught us all about the nature.I've learned that there are 21 types of grass like, Spear grass,Finger grass,Terpentyn grass,Pinhol grass etc. They also taught us about the different boks there are like the Blesbok,Koedoe etc.
Besides all the hard work,It was really a lot of fun!
7 February 2011
Today we started with the fundamentials of Game Reserve,Lodge Management and Hospitality Fundamentials.
They taught us about armed robbery, and when to stay calm in most situations and not to try to be a hero and to challenge a theif. It might be a very bad idea. They also taught us about the different types of attractions you get,and what attractions are man made or from the nature.Examples of man made attractions are Big Ben,and from the nature are things like the Victorian falls.I would really like to laern more about these fundamentials.
8 February 2011
Today I've learned about food safety and everything that goes hand to hand with it.We also learned more about personal Hygene.
I really enjoyed our "Play"today where we had to explain step by step how to buy it to making it.We also had to write our own song and had to perform it to the students.
9 February 2011
Today everyone worked on communication skills, conflict, talked about rasism, discrimination etc...
It was really a fun day with all the practical we had like to protect an egg from breaking, building a tower out of a certain amount of things given to us.We also invented a new game that does'nt exist. It was really awesome to participate in all of the new games!Tomorrow we will be doing our act on customer care.
10 February 2011
Today we've learned how to handle a guest that does'nt speak or understand your language.
If you see that the person does'nt speak your language, you greet the person and inform the person that you do'nt understand. Then you start writing pictures or do whatever it takes to find out what the guest wants.
We've also learned how to greet and talk to guests on a phone.
"Sondela goeie more/middag/naand,dis Shani wat praat hoe kan ek help?"It's important to speak with enthusiasim!!!
14 February 2011
Today we finished the last part of communication.Written communication like E-mail,Facebook,different types of letters etc...We had to write all those letters, and had to swop with other groups to mark each others work. They also announced or confirmed that we can enjoy a great Valentines ball tonight.I'm really looking forward to that!
